Basic Course on Stata for Data Analysis and Interpretation of Outputs [Cohort 03]

1. Course description

Data management and analysis are challenging as well as rewarding. There are numerous software programs available for data analysis. Stata is a widely used and easy-to-use quantitative data analysis software. Stata supports a wide range of statistical methods for data analysis. This course is designed with a focus on the needs of students (MPH, MSc, MPhil, MD, FCPS, MS, and PhD), young researchers, public health, social science, data management and M&E professionals, teachers and others.
This is a 20-hour online practical hands-on training course, spread over eight sessions. The sessions are held in the evening on Saturdays. The course covers data management, descriptive statistics, and hypothesis testing using the bivariate and multivariable (logistic regression and linear regression) methods. In addition, non-parametric methods and the calculation of wealth quintiles are also covered in this course. The participants are provided with free course materials, such as a book on Stata (written by the course directors, Md. Tajul Islam, et al.), datasets for practice, power point presentations, and MCQs for self-evaluation. Certificates are provided to the successful candidates.

2. Objectives

The aim of this course is to develop skilled professionals in the field of research, especially in data management and analysis. The overall objective of the course is to empower the participants with necessary but specific knowledge and skills on the use of Stata for data analysis and interpretation of the outputs. On completion of the course, the participants are expected to be able to:

  • Use Stata for data entry, data cleaning, and data management;
  • Select appropriate statistical tests for testing hypotheses;
  • Use Stata to analyze data by using the univariate, bivariate, and multivariable statistical methods; and
  • Interpret the outputs of data analysis.

3. Course Content

  • Introduction to Stata (Stata interface and Basics of Stata, including Stata files)
  • Generating a data file and browsing of data in Stata
  • Data management: Recoding, generation of new variables, data transformation, calculation of duration, identification of outliers, checking data for normality, calculation of total score, and others
  • Generating graphs
  • Descriptive statistics: Central tendency and dispersion, quartile and percentile, skewness and Kurtosis, including interpretations and use
  • Bivariate analysis: t-test, chi-square test, AVOVA, correlation, regression, and non-parametric methods including interpretation and use
  • Multivariable analysis: Multiple linear regression and logistic regression, including interpretation and use

4. Target group

This course is most suitable for young researchers, students (MPH, MSc, MPhil, PhD, MD, MS, FCPS, and others), teachers, public health, social science, data management and M&E professionals, and others involved in research, data management, and analysis. 

5. Training methods

The training will be conducted online via the Zoom platform. The participants need to have a computer/laptop with an internet connection and Stata software.

6. Course fee

The course fee for participants in Bangladesh is Tk. 4,000 (four thousand only). The course fee is US$ 60 (sixty only) for international participants. The course fee will also cover the cost of course materials, e.g. paperback book, certificate, and others. Funds generated from the course fees will go to charity.

7. Training schedule

  • Training duration: 14 December 2024 to 01 February 2025
  • Class time: 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm (Bangladesh time) on Saturdays
  • Registration deadline: 12 December 2024

8. Course materials

The participants will be provided with a paperback Stata book (Data Analysis with Stata by Md. Tajul Islam, et al.) for free. Several hypothetical datasets that will be used during training sessions will be provided for practice. We also provide MCQs for self-evaluation of the participants.

9. Requirements

Applicants should have at least a bachelor degree in social science, public health, medical science, biological science, or any other discipline with an interest in data management and analysis. The participants will be awarded a certificate on successful completion of the course. The course will be evaluated by the participants at the end of the course. The evaluation will be made through self-administered questionnaires as well as open discussions.
